Week 2 Player of the Week: North Murray’s Judson Petty
There’s a new state record for most receiving yards in a game, and it belongs to Judson Petty, a North Murray wide receiver who would’ve had an outstanding game even without his 16 receptions for 360 yards and four touchdowns. Petty also rushed for 42 yards and had 11 solo tackles.
Week 2 Offensive Line of the Week: Madison County
Madison County’s offensive line paved the way for 527 rushing yards, seven rushing touchdowns and 609 total yards in a 55-35 victory over Elbert County, which was ranked No. 4 in Class A Division I.
Week 1 Student-Athlete of the Week: Mount Paran Christian’s George Childs
George Childs kicked the winning field goal in overtime in the Eagles’ 29-26 victory over Midtown last week. He has a 4.3 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the Math and Spanish National Honor Societies.
Week 1 Team of the Week: Manchester
Manchester lost only three Class A Division II games last season. They were to eventual champion Bowdon (twice) and runner-up Schley County. The accumulated motivation might’ve been the extra point the Blue Devils needed last week when they defeated Bowdon 21-20 to open the season.
Week 1 Player of the Week: Wayne County’s Matt Fuller
Jaybo Shaw has been given much credit for Wayne County’s turnaround from an 0-9 finish in 2021 to the 10-3 record in the coach’s first season last year. If there’s a single player that has made the most difference, it’s probably Matt Fuller, a running back and linebacker committed to South Carolina.
Week 1 Offensive Line of the Week: Sandy Creek
Sandy Creek’s offensive line paved the way for a school-record 502 rushing yards and six touchdowns in a 44-24 victory over Newnan last week.
2022 scoutSMART All-Academic Team
GHSF Daily, in conjunction with scoutSMART, has announced a football student-athlete of the week each Friday this season. Want to get recruited to play college sports? Become a scoutSMART recruit so coaches can find you!
Flag Football Players of the Week: Blessed Trinity’s Julia Geis, Jaclyn Johns
Julia Geis and Jaclyn Johns of Blessed Trinity are GHSF Daily’s Flag Football Players of the Week. Geis threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Johns in the second overtime of Blessed Trinity’s 19-13 victory over Milton for the Class 7A championship Thursday.
GIAA Championship Team of the Week: St. Anne-Pacelli
St. Anne-Pacelli fielded its first varsity football team in 1960. Its coach, Dwight Jones, got his first high school coaching job in 1979. Neither had won a state championship until last week, when fate smiled on the two.
Semifinal Player of the Week: Carrollton’s Bryce Hicks
Coming off a five-touchdown game in the quarterfinals, Bryce Hicks was hard pressed to top it last week. The Carrollton running back did what he could, rushing for a career-high 205 yards on 37 carries and throwing a 9-yard touchdown pass in a 35-27 victory over second-ranked Colquitt County in the Class 7A semifinals.
Flag Football Player of the Week: Milton’s Lindsey Gergans
Lindsey Gergans, a senior at Milton, is GHSF Daily’s Flag Football Player of the Week. Gergans was 17-of-21 passing for 228 yards and four touchdowns in a 26-20 victory over No. 1-ranked McEachern in the Class 7A quarterfinals Thursday.
Quarterfinal Team of the Week: Bowdon
Bowdon hadn’t won a road playoff game since 2013, and things weren’t looking good Friday night, when the top-ranked Red Devils trailed third-ranked Early County 19-0 in the first half of their Class A Division II quarterfinal.
Quarterfinal Player of the Week: Thomson’s Jontavis Curry
Thomson entered the fourth quarter of its quarterfinal game against South Atlanta with a 10-point lead, then was torched by four touchdowns. But South Atlanta couldn’t keep the ball away from Jontavis Curry, who ran back two kickoffs for touchdowns.
Round 2 Team of the Week: Wayne County
New Wayne County coach Jaybo Shaw came from a program that had won 10 games and made the quarterfinals each season since 2015. That was Rabun County. Shaw’s expectations were the same at Wayne County, but maybe not this soon. But after an 0-9 season last year, Wayne County has arrived.
Round 2 Player of the Week: Walton’s Jeremy Hecklinski
Jeremy Hecklinski has had better games on paper, but probably never on the field. Walton’s junior quarterback was 21-of-39 passing for 315 yards and three touchdowns and scored a touchdown in 42-35 victory over No. 1-ranked Buford in a Class 7A second-round playoff game last week.
Flag Football Player of the Week: Lithia Springs’ Hannah McIver
Hannah McIver, a junior at Lithia Springs, is GHSF Daily’s Flag Football Player of the Week. McIver intercepted four passes, returning two for touchdowns, in shutout victories over New Manchester and Douglas County last week.
Round 1 Student-Athlete of the Week: Woodward Academy’s River Hanson
River Hanson, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior free safety at Woodward Academy, is the scoutSMART Student-Athlete of the Week. Hanson has accounted for 58 total tackles, two tackles for losses, one interception, five pass break-ups and one fumble recovery for the 10-1 War Eagles this season.
Round 1 Team of the Week: Cass
Cass is GHSF Daily’s state Team of the Week, and there hasn’t been a more clear-cut choice this season. The Colonels’ 27-17 victory over fourth-ranked Jefferson in the Class 5A first round last week was their first postseason win since 1983 and the first over a ranked opponent from the same classification in school history.
Round 1 Player of the Week: Stephenson’s Devin Ingram
Devin Ingram was having an outstanding game before his team got down 38-26 with five minutes to play in the Class 4A first round last week. Then he finished it. The junior running back from Stephenson returned a kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 58-yard run with 1:15 left give Jaguars a 40-38 victory over Pace Academy.
Flag Football Player of the Week: McEachern’s Amber Kirkpatrick
Amber Kirkpatrick, a senior at McEachern, is GHSF Daily’s Flag Football Player of the Week. Kirkpatrick led McEachern to a 16-0 regular season, which concluded with four victories Saturday.
