Round 2 Team of the Week: Wayne County

New Wayne County coach Jaybo Shaw came from a program that had won 10 games and made the quarterfinals each season since 2015. That was Rabun County.

Wayne County players and coaches accept the state Team of the Week award at their school on Nov. 22, 2022.

Shaw’s expectations were the same at Wayne County, but maybe not this soon. But after an 0-9 season last year, Wayne County has arrived. The Yellow Jackets beat third-ranked Perry 14-7 last week to improve to 10-2 and reach the quarters for the first time since 2013.

The victory gave Wayne County its first 10-win season since 2018, its first quarterfinal since 2013 and its first road playoff victory over a top-10 opponent since 1976.

The Yellow Jackets became the second team in GHSA history, after Monroe Area in 2012, to reach 10 victories after a full winless season.

Wayne County is GHSF Daily’s state Team of the Week. The award is sponsored by BSN Sports and Titan Electric.
