Week 10 Team of the Week: Spencer

Odis Spencer Stadium opened this month on the campus of Spencer High in Columbus. It’s named after a coach who led Spencer to four state titles in the 1950s and 1960s in the Georgia Interscholastic Association, the league for African American schools during segregation. Odis Spencer was the coach of five future NFL players from Spencer, including Otis Sistrunk, who was inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Spencer players, coaches and cheerleaders accepted the state Team of the Week plaque at their school in Columbus on Oct. 26, 2022.

Spencer High hasn’t won a region title since Spencer retired in 1972, but it’s determined to honor its historic coach with a championship this season.

Spencer’s 14-13 victory last week over Northeast, a 34-point favorite, put the Greenwave in first place in Region 2-2A with two games to play. Antonio Wilson returned a fumble 70 yards for a 7-0 lead, and Gary Gaither threw a 67-yard TD pass to Tony Montgomery for the game-winner. Now, a Spencer win over ACE Charter on Nov. 4 at Odis Spencer Stadium would clinch it.

Spencer is GHSF Daily’s state Team of the Week. The award is sponsored by BSN Sports and Titan Electric.
