Maggie Pangle, playing on an injured ankle, caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Kenzie Horton with 4:10 remaining and Greenbrier added a safety on the final play of the game to defeat the defending champions. It was the first title for Greenbrier (19-1), which was eliminated from the playoffs by Lithia Springs the past two seasons.

Class A Division II: Bowdon 28, Manchester 27

A penalty on an extra-point attempt with 7:23 left kept Manchester a point behind, and Bowdon ran out the clock on a 14-play, 74-yard drive (all runs) that required three third-down conversions and ended in victory formation near Manchester’s goal line. Kyler McGrinn rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

GHSA heads back to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for state finals

Walton, Coffee, Stockbridge and Perry will try to win their first football state championships this week in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is home again to the GHSA finals after a four-season hiatus. Woodward Academy, Thomas County Central, Rockmart, Swainsboro and Manchester hope to win for the first time in more than 20 years. Prince Avenue Christian and Bowdon will attempt to defend their 2022 championships.

Creekside and Coffee will meet in the Class 5A final Wednesday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the only championship game this year between No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams.
