Things will be different in 2022. Out of 412 GHSA football teams, 129 are in new classifications, and 92 have new head coaches. Lowndes and Valdosta share a region for the first time since 2015. Buford and Collins Hill share a region for the first time in history.

With Herschel Walker the lone unanimous pick, the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame announced 36 members of its inaugural class Thursday, 100 days ahead of their Oct. 22 induction. The 36 were the highest vote-getters from a 100-player ballot and will join the nine Pro Football Hall of Fame members from Georgia who were granted automatic admission in May, giving the new Hall 45 inaugural inductees.

Kirk Warner, a former Georgia tight end and the football coach at Liberty County in south Georgia since 2002, died of cancer Thursday. Warner was the high school coach of NFL players Raekwon McMillan, an All-American at Ohio State, and Richard LeCounte, a star safety at Georgia.

The Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame finalized its ballot Tuesday, revealing the 100 candidates in contention for 36 spots in the inaugural class to be inducted in October.

Al Pellegrino, the athletic director and football coach at Shaw High in Columbus, died Monday while in Florida, the Muscogee County School District announced Tuesday. No cause of death was given. He was 56.

Former Florida coach Dan Mullen will serve as a “contributing resource” to Lake Oconee Academy’s football program in Greene County this fall, the school confirmed to the Lake Oconee News on Sunday.
