Week 11 Team of the Week: Stephens County

When odds are long, Stephens County thrives. The Indians were given a 5.9% chance of winning Region 8-3A in preseason by the computer Maxwell Ratings. Region rivals Oconee County, Monroe Area and Hebron Christian have been ranked in the top 10 at various times this season.

Stephens County head coach Wesley Tankersley and senior members of the team accept the Georgia Team of the Week plaque from GHSF Daily at their school on Nov. 2, 2022.

Even after winning its first four region games and its magic number down to one Friday night, Stephens County found itself trailing 27-14 in the second half against ninth-ranked Oconee County in what essentially was a winner-take-all game for the championship.

Stephens County beat the odds again, forcing turnovers and scoring touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to secure the program’s first region championship since 2007.

Stephens County is GHSF Daily’s state Team of the Week. The award is sponsored by BSN Sports and Titan Electric.
