Week 1 Team of the Week: Apalachee

As soon as practical, any new football coach should strive to get rid of any losing streak he finds lying around. It’s good for morale.

In coach Kevin Saunders’ first game Saturday, his new team, 15-point underdog Apalachee, discarded a 29-game losing streak, defeating Chattahoochee 29-9 and avenging a 47-21 loss from the previous season. Sharese McCowan, playing his first varsity game, rushed for 122 yards on 19 carries.

Apalachee head coach Kevin Saunders and the Wildcats’ leadership council were joined by Alan Long and Mike Husted of BSN Sports for the presentation of GHSF Daily’s Team of the Week award after their 29-9 victory over Chattahoochee last week that ended a 29-game losing streak.

“I got handshakes by people I hadn’t met yet,” Saunders said. “Students that aren’t in my class come up to me and say thank you. They were thanking all the players. It was very emotional for a lot of the kids.”

Apalachee is GHSF Daily’s Team of the Week. The award is sponsored by BSN Sports and Siemens.
